Some of my most favorite pieces of media have come overseas. The definition of international movies can be described as a movie that’s origin is based overseas that wants to break into mainstream Hollywood. This often results in these various types of movies needing subtitles in various languages due to the variety of different films from multiple countries often filmed in foreigners native tongue. Movies like Parasite, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Spirited Away were the type of movies that from the very moment that I sat, waited for the film to begin, felt what some would describe as movie magic captured my attention and everything else fell away. And I know I’m not the only one. After its release, Pan’s Labyrinth won awards like best art direction and best score, showing its effect on people due to its quality.

It seems most high quality international movies, when given the chance to break the market in the US, are able to achieve a certain level of success. Even now, Spirited away is still one of the most popular animated films to come from Japan. It even still ranks as one of the highest grossed films to this day , even after debuting 25 years ago. As for parasite, it won the academy award for best picture among many other accolades due its performance in the box office and its overall quality.

Although the movies chosen are somewhat fantastical (due to personal tastes) these results are generally produced regardless of the genre. Just in case the movies recently discussed aren’t your personal taste, please try looking for international movies of all genres, hopefully you’ll find something that has changed your life in the same way it has mine! If you already do watch international movies, please leave your favorite ones in the comment section!
