When I was a child, I was a vivacious reader. Always immersed in the world of fiction, magic and action were at the center of my fixations when it comes to reading or engaging in stories. However, at one point I began to slowly tip-toe towards horror at a younger age than I probably should’ve had. Horror often had magical elements and action due to the nature of a lot of slasher films. It got to the point that as a ten-year old, I somehow found a way to convince my mom to take me to a horror movie by the name of My Bloody Valentine for both the first and last time in theatres.
(Man was I terrified in that theatre!)
But late at night a few years later, when I most likely should’ve been getting ready to go to bed, I turned on the BBC channel for the first time, and from that point the interests that had in fiction began to grow yet again. When I went on that channel I began to watch a very old, very popular series by the name of Doctor Who! For someone who had very little interest in that genre until then it was a great way to ease me into possibly watching other similar series or asking my local librarians about interesting sci-fi novels.
Looking back, finding interests in genres’ I tend to shy away from has always expanded my idea of what “Quality shows” can look like. Especially because of the fact that now I can more easily try different genres in an attempt to find quality stories, not just stories I believe I should like based on preferences. But what’s your favorite sci-fi show? If you don’t like science fiction, what’s stopping you from trying it? And like always if you haven’t, please engage with the media I mentioned above!
